Short Story Unit Reflection
There were actually two parts that I enjoyed the most about this short story unit. First one was the circle time. I enjoyed reading other peoples’ stories, seeing what they’re writing about, giving them feedback and also getting feedback about my own story. I also liked just coming the class, putting my headphones on, and just writing, it’s kind of relaxing. But if I could change anything, I would give us more time to write, maybe one or two weeks. I think my story would be better, have a better ending if we had a little more time.
In this unit I learned that you don’t need to have a great topic to start writing. If you just have an idea and start writing, everything comes to you as you write.
Reading famous short stories like The Lottery and The Tell-Tale Heart made me understand what foreshadowing more clearly and I used it in my story, so it was useful for me. And we had fun too!
As a kid, I didn’t like writing stories because I couldn’t find the perfect topic, so when I started to write something, I would read it and think that the subject would bore people, so I would just give up. But with this unit I learned that if you try too hard and overthink, it won’t come to you. So I learned that the best way you can find good topics is to look around you and write about something you know, and enjoy.
