I think this short story is trying to tell us that love is greater than any other power. That if two people really love each other and want to be together, their love can overcome any obstacle, even if that is a nuclear war. They endure one anothers different and sometimes challenging behaviours in order to be together. The end of the story was really cute, it definitely backed up what I said a few sentences before. They were happy together in the real world and they still were when they died. The things happening outside, the problems, did not affect them.
